LEARNING
February 2016: A Week at the Woodmark
When we participate in something for the first time the image we envision prior to our engagement is often vastly different from the experience itself. This was true for me as we began our foray into the world of early learning. I entered the program thinking that because of my involvement in the early learning program within my district, I was well versed in many of the issues around PreK-3 learning. After a week of deep engagement, I learned what I knew was just the tip of the iceberg. This paper will endeavor to capture some of the learning and emotions that I felt as I embarked on this learning journey... (Click the icon above to view the entire paper.)
From K-12 to Pre-School
The Kent Valley Early Learning Center (KVELC) is home to kindergarten classes from two near-by elementary schools. The KVELC opened two years ago to alleviate the over-crowding at the elementary schools. I chose to visit the Early Childhood Educational Assistance Program (ECEAP) preschool which is also housed in this center. ECEAP provides free preschool education and services to children three to five years old. Through the program, families who meet the income eligibility criteria and live within the Kent School District boundaries are provided with opportunities to engage in their child's education and be connected with resources in the community.
